Satellite Awards chief fires back: 'We've seen 'Wolf of Wall Street'"

International Press Academy chief Mirjana Van Blaricom blasts a press account that claims she and her members did not see "The Wolf of Wall Street" before voting for the Satellite Award nominations.

"I saw it on Saturday at 12:30 at the SAG screening," she tells Gold Derby. "I was with nine other members of my group. Over all, I saw 27 of us at that screening. Many other members saw the movie at the three other industry screenings that were held over the weekend."

Kris Tapley reported at HifFix earlier today: "The film landed five nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Director and Actor. Had they seen it? After all, it's only screened for guilds and HFPA so far. Turns out, no, they haven't seen it. Sources at the studio confirmed that they neither submitted nor screened 'Wolf' for Satellite Award consideration. And specifically, Van Blaricom, I'm told, didn't see the film. So chalk its mentions up as what they are: a blatant attempt to get people like Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio to show up at the March 9 ceremony."

Van Blaricom admits that Paramount did not screen the movie specifically to Satellite voters, but "we usually see movies at industry screenings," she says. "AFTRA and SAG voters are permitted to bring two guests and we go with them. That way we get to see movies first. The first press screening for 'Wolf of Wall Street' isn't until this Friday."

She's referring to the first official journalists' screening that Gold Derby and many other media outlets are invited to attend on Dec. 6. The only exceptions made are to voters of the Golden Globes, New York Film Critics' Circle and National Board of Review (who aren't technically journalists). Otherwise, anyone hellbent to see it sooner must hustle a guest invite to a guild screening. That's what Tapley says he did to see it on Saturday afternoon – he went to the SAG Foundation screening held at the WGA.

A studio source who knows Van Blaricom well says she did not see the Satellites' chief at the Saturday screening to which regular SAG/AFTRA members had to identify themselves by showing their membership cards and they were not permitted to bring guests, as they usually are.

"Only members of the SAG nominating committee could bring a guest to that screening," the source says, "and there are only about 20 of those. It's possible that one of them brought Van Blaricom as a guest and I didn't see her, but there's no way that 27 IPA members were there."

Jesse Bush, who organized the SAG Foundation screening, says the theater holds 475 people and was filled to capacity. When asked if she saw Van Blaricom there, Bush said, "I don't know what she looks like."

Van Blaricom could not say specifically how many of her members saw "Wolf" at all four industry screenings held over the weekend. "Of our 200 members, about 130 vote," she says. "Enough of them saw the movie to get it nominations. A movie doesn't need a lot of votes to get nominated."

That controversy aside, there are other problems with today's Satellite Award nominations. "Louie" is nominated for Best TV Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor even though the show didn't air during the 2013 eligibility period. The last "Louie" episode aired on September 27, 2012.

"We made a mistake," Van Blaricom admits. "Our members didn't realize that when they were voting. We will fix that."

She also said that she will investigate a curious contradiction in placement of "Once Upon a Time." On the IPA's website, it's nominated for Best Comedy Series, but not in the official press release where it's up for Best TV Series or Miniseries, Genre. "We will look into that," she promised when we pointed this out.

"Veep" appears on the press release as nominee for Best Comedy Series, but not on the website. She says the website version is wrong – "Veep," yes, is nominated – and she blames her website software. "WordPress works strangely," she says.

Weirdly enough I think that Leo probably has the best chance of a win at the Oscars, but the most difficulty getting nominated. The movie has a pretty clear path to a nomination among the 9-10 that are typically nominated in the current system. Marty also has support among his fellow directors.

On the other hand the leading man category is the strongest, it has been for many years. We basically have six people competing for 5 slots, with two outsiders. The six are Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Robert Redford (All Is Lost), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Leo. The two outsiders are Joaquin Phoenix (Her) and Christian Bale (Out Of The Furnace).
The two outsiders are outsiders because they have the most going against them. Phoenix was just nominated last year and Out Of The Furnace is very bleak and is probably not gonna make much at the box office. That leaves us with the six guys fighting for five spots.

The peculiar thing is however, that if you make it to the five nominees, it's very even for the win. Ejiofor is the only one of the six who can feel assured of a nom. He is in the likely Best Picture winner and has stronger critical support than the rest. (I'm discounting Leo because we don't know how strong critical support he will have) But Ejiofor can't be certain of the win. He has the best chance, but all six are pretty much on an even playing field. That's why if Leo makes it in, then he has the best chance of winning something for WOWWS.

It's very difficult for DiCaprio to get in. Besides those actors you mentioned, there are a couple more like Whitaker and Isaac, and Bale also has American Hustle. But I agree that if he were to get in his chances for the win would increase.


Jonah Hill will receive the Creative Impact in Acting Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival:

Director John Lee Hancock and actor Jonah Hill will be recognized by Variety during the “10 Directors to Watch” event Jan. 5 as part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The event will be presented by Mercedes-Benz at the Parker Palm Springs.

Hancock will receive the Creative Impact in Directing Award, which celebrates the filmmaker for his outstanding contributions to the art and business of cinema, notably his work in directing the upcoming “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Hill has earned the Creative Impact in Acting Award for his scope of work ranging from his comedic performances and more dramatic fare such as his Academy Award nominated role in “Moneyball” to the upcoming Martin Scorsese film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

“In addition to their successes this year, both Hancock and Hill have rich bodies of work to celebrate, and both exemplify the continuing creative vitality and artistic risk-taking of American film at its best,” said Steve Gaydos, executive editor at Variety.

That's the lineup, but many of them don't stand a chance in reality. Michael B. Jordan's movie made very little at the box office and has already largely been forgotten, because his movie was released in the summer. He also lacks the kind of critical support "the six" has. Elba and Whitaker has even less critical support. Whitaker has the box office and Harvey Weinstein, but he was overshadowed by the supporting cast in his film and doesn't have strong critical support. Oscar Isaac does have the critical support, but his performance is very subdued. He is gonna struggle against some very showy performances. You could say the same for Robert Redford, but he is a veteran with a big clout in Hollywood. Many voters will think that a young man like Isaac will deliver another worthy performance in the future they could nominate. On the other hand Redford is 77 and unlikely to be back another year. Christian Bale isn't promoting his performance in American Hustle. The promotion for that film will be handled by Jennifer Lawrence and probably Bradley Cooper. Instead he will promote and campaign for Out Of The Furnace, because he believes that he gives a better performance in that film.

That's why I would call Forrest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale for American Hustle long shots instead of outsiders.

I hope Leo gets nominated as this looks to be a really praised performance and he looks great in it but unfortunately the sleaziness and how unlikeable his character is will hurt him. And now of course after WOWS has been gaining a bunch of buzz in the last few days the negative reports from detractors leak out like about the HFPA supposedly being offended by the film.
