The actress — who is rumored to be dating Alexander Skarsgard — insists she is surprised to be labeled as one of Hollywood's most beautiful women because of her teenage experiences.

She said: "I take it as a huge compliment, but I grew up feeling very unattractive. As a teenager, I was gangly and had braces and glasses. I was lucky that I had a pretty glamorous role in 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' and that was how most people saw me for the first time."

But the 24-year-old beauty is eager to prove there is more to her than just good looks.

She told 'OK!' magazine: "I won't take parts where the female character has no substance. Even Naomi [in 'Wolf of Wall Street'], there was a lot more to her than appeared in the script when I first read it, and Marty [Scorsese] and Leo [DiCaprio] were very supportive of making her as strong as possible."

So then, after a year on Pan Am, Scorsese called for The Wolf Of Wall Street. Presumably Dakota Fanning was busy?

Yeah, she must have been doing something else. The fact I was cast in that still boggles my mind.

Did you get the chance to pester him for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull stories?

Lighting set-ups take a long time, so between takes we would have 40 minutes or so just to hang out, and every time he told a story we were like little kids in school, we would just shut up and listen. He’d tell us these stories about Frank Sinatra or Charlie Chaplin, all these iconic people he’s met over the years, and it was just amazing to witness – everybody would just be quiet and listen.

How was it working with Scorsese? Is he quite exacting?

Funnily enough, he really leaves you to your own devices. I assumed he’d be very hands-on and have a lot to say, because his style is so distinctive, but it was actually quite the opposite. The most important thing was that he would give us the freedom to explore the characters – he would let the camera roll for 20 minutes sometimes and not call cut. It was a very liberal set, you could say and do what you wanted. It was all about creating characters people would be interested in. We had a lot of time, as well, which was magical and he just trusted everyone to do their own jobs.

How was he with some of the edgier material?

For a guy who puts such raw and honest things in his movies, he’s extremely conservative when talking about them. I remember talking with him about the sex scenes and he said, “So in that scene when Jordan and Naomi are making love,” and I was just, “Making love? I don’t know if I’d call it that…” He was so reserved.

Are nude scenes as nerve-wracking as people imagine them to be?

It was daunting to say the least. It’s not like Marty came in and just said, “I think you should be naked and having sex on a bed of money.” That was all in the script. My prep was more like salads for three days leading up to it. I’m a lot more careful now, but during that shoot I just ate what I wanted, then three days before a nude scene I’d cut out the burgers and drinking. It’s not the most fun part of acting, I eat terribly.

Robbie’s character, Naomi Lapaglia, was described in the screenplay as ‘the hottest blonde ever’. Along with ‘every other actress in town’, she sent in her video with no expectation that it would even be watched. It was Ellen Lewis, the eminent casting director and veteran Scorsese collaborator, who passed Robbie’s video along to the director; Lewis it was who put Stefani into Jean Harlow’s shoes for The Aviator and Cameron Diaz into Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. When the call came for an audition, Robbie was in London. She remembers the date – 3 June 2012 – because it was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend, and she’d been invited to join some fellow Aussies for a picnic: an all-day event that turned into an all-nighter.

Over to Robbie for what happened next: ‘I get home at six in the morning to all these missed phone calls and my team is saying, “You are on a plane in a couple of hours to New York to read with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.” So: race to the airport, get to New York, go straight to see Ellen Lewis, she takes one look at me, I’m wearing jeans, flat boots, and she says, “No. Here’s what you’re going to do: SoHo’s right there. Lots of stores. You’re going to get a really tight, short dress and the highest pair of heels you can find.”’

Cut to the audition the following day. ‘OK, so: big open room, video camera, Ellen Lewis is filming. Just me, Marty and Leo.’ In the scene, Robbie’s character and DiCaprio’s character, the degenerate financier Jordan Belfort – the Wolf of the title – are on their first date. ‘We get three lines into it and he says something and, subconsciously, I roll my eyes. And Leo’s like, “What was that look for?” And I’m thinking, in my head: “That’s not a line! Is he really asking me that? Should I explain?” And then I realise he’s ad-libbing. I’m like, “Oh, shit. He’s improvising! I need to improvise now!”

‘So I’m failing miserably. And Leo’s phenomenal. He’s powerful. He can do his part and he can do your part at the same time with his eyes closed. I’m barely getting a word in. When I do it’s not anything interesting – I just look pathetic.’

Next scene. The characters are now married, and mid-argument. Robbie again: ‘In my head I was like, “You have literally 30 seconds left in this room and if you don’t do something impressive nothing will ever come of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it.” And so I start screaming at him and he’s yelling back at me. And he’s really scary. I can barely keep up. And he ends it saying, “You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now get over here and kiss me.” So I walk up really close to his face and then I’m like, “Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?” But another part of my brain clicks and I just go, Whack! I hit him in the face. And then I scream, “Fuck you!” And that’s not in the script at all. The room just went dead silent and I froze.

‘I’m thinking, “You just hit Leonardo DiCaprio in the face. They’re going to arrest you because that’s assault. You’re definitely never going to work again, that’s for sure. They’ll probably sue you as well in case there’s a bruise on his face and he needs to film something else.”

‘And then all of a sudden Marty and Leo just burst out laughing. Marty says, “That was great!” Leo’s like, “Hit me again!”’

The path you’ve been on as a working actor has been pretty atypical. First you worked with Martin Scorsese (4), then you went to Sundance.
It was kind of nice though. It’s still all about passionate film-makers. Marty, even at 70, still strikes me as one of the biggest film enthusiasts that I’ve come across. A lot of people in the indie world admire him, despite the fact that the things he works on have such a large scale. I’ve felt as much passion on the big ones as I have on the other ones.

I was actually trying to get the role of Ann in Z for Zachariah before I had done Wolf. But because I hadn’t done a large film, I didn’t have enough international value to my name to get the film funded. So another actress was attached who had been in more bigger budget, commercial films. Ironically, you have to do the bigger films in order to make a small film. When I first tried to do Z for Zachariah, I couldn’t attach enough value to my name.

Was acting with Chiwetel Ejiofor intimidating?
Yeah! It was right in the midst of the 12 Years a Slave press, so it was a little intimating. And he’s a force to be reckoned with on set. He’s a really powerful actor, really like Leo [DiCaprio]. They both have a screen presence; they’ve very lovely, approachable people, but when you’re doing a scene with them, if you don’t keep up with them, they’ll just roll right over you.
