That's OK; his Wolf of Wall Street co-star was excited enough for them both. "I screamed. I literally screamed," Robbie said at the NYC premiere of her new film, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. "Everyone was beside themselves, no one would sit down, just kept clapping as he was doing his speech. It was an amazing moment."

The Australian beauty caught up with him post-ceremony and encouraged him to celebrate his accomplishment. "I was like, 'Let your hair down! You just won an Oscar!'" she said. So, celebrate they did. "I was like, ‘let's go dance,' he was like, 'OK.'"

For Margot Robbie, the Hustle Never Stops

Her formidable performance (and Noo Yawk dialect) in “The Wolf of Wall Street” became her calling card. But it also required her to appear in several nude scenes, including one in which she entices Mr. DiCaprio’s character wearing only a pair of stockings and high heels.

Ms. Robbie said she struggled with that provocative sequence. Recalling her thoughts at the time, she said: “The sacrifice I have to make is that I have to do this nudity thing that I don’t really want to do. But I get to work with Scorsese, which I really want to do. O.K., what outweighs what?”

Though the director told her she could play the scene in a robe or underwear, Ms. Robbie said that once she got invested in the character: “I was like, she wouldn’t do that, no way. She would be fully naked.”

For all the vast and accelerated star-making machinery of our age, it's rare for an actress to have a breakout role in her first American movie, let alone a role opposite DiCaprio and directed by Scorsese. She had one role in a theatrical release before that in the bad British rom-com About Time, starring Rachel McAdams. In Wolf we are introduced to her character, Naomi, by a man's nostalgic, longing voiceover, and by the spectacle of said man stopping in his tracks to gaze at her. The scene is a pool party and she arrives in a tight teal dress with those wide cerulean eyes and gold-plated hoops, looking seven per cent taller and slimmer than Robbie does in life (we are finally in a time when A-list actresses don't have to be tinier in person, since whatever the camera adds, the retouchers take away). "I'd fuck that girl if she were my sister," says one of Jordan/DiCaprio's asinine friends. "I'd let that girl give me AIDS," says another, upping the ante. Yet another whips his dick out in the foyer. It's an intro so farcical it begs you to say, 'She's not that hot,' and it is evidence of Robbie's incredible ability to disarm that Naomi appears to be thinking exactly the same thing.

"I was really glammed-up in Wolf," she explains, "so I said to my team, 'I'm never going to get anything other than that kind of glam thing now, so we need to do something where I'm dirty.'"

It's something that we explored in The Wolf of Wall Street because people would say, oh they were doing such horrible things, but to our characters it didn't seem horrible anymore because they became so used to it and so accustomed to it," she adds. "It's a really fascinating character journey to see the things you end up doing because you've forgotten where that line of what's right and wrong is anymore."

Your career seems to keep gaining momentum. After playing a very glamorous and sexy role in The Wolf of Wall Street, is it hard to steer clear of the bombshell tag that comes with that kind of character?
I’m not very thrilled with being labelled that way. It minimises your work in a film like that where you’re working with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. I don’t want to be reduced to the clichés that come with being called sexy or a blonde bombshell. I want to keep looking for roles where the main interest will be in the character itself; her importance in driving a story forward rather than her relationship with the male character. But I think films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Focus gave me a chance to play very charismatic and clever women – even though they do have a glamorous side.

As Jared Leto, her costar in Suicide Squad, puts it, “She took a role that other people would have had a very difficult time with and elevated it to something spectacular. To be able to stand alongside Leo [DiCaprio], one of the titans of the industry, and be there face-to-face, blow for blow, and not only hold her ground but really shine, was kind of a rare, explosive discovery. It reminded me of Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface.”

At first, Robbie wasn’t even sure she wanted to play such a shrewd ballbuster. “When I first read it, I thought, I have nothing in common with her. I hate her. It was a really tricky one to get my head around. But her motivation was ‘You guys are doing it—why shouldn’t I? It’s this man’s world, and I’m going to get mine.’ And I understand that.”
