''It comes out at the end of the year'' does not mean it won`t or can`t be shown at Cannes. Even in out of competition. I`m betting the first showing will be in a festival (Cannes or Venice) because its a festival arthouse kind of film and they would like the buzz. The thing im wondering now is if Marty will direct a film or a doc or a TV pilot/episode this year.

To me that says a limited opening in NYC/LA over the Thanksgiving weekend and then expanding wide throughout the rest of the year depending on the other competition in theaters at the time.

Thanks, nas. That's good to know. I'm guessing that by "regular people" he doesn't mean a general audience. Perhaps, a secret screening at NYFF?

"Depends on Paramount" is an ominous line though. This is the studio that pushed Shutter Island to an early 2010 release because they wanted to put all their Oscar eggs in one Peter Jackson directed The Lovely Bones basket. And Paramount already has several prestige films set for Oscar glory this fall - Denis Villeneuve's ARRIVAL, Robert Zemeckis' ALLIED, Denzel Washington's FENCES & possibly James Gray's THE LOST CITY OF Z. And it might be tough for Paramount to push for a Best Actor nomination for Andrew Garfield - Oscar nominations make some of these movies a financial hit - because unless it's a disaster the strong money will be on him being nominated for the more conventional Oscar pic HACKSAW RIDGE from Mel Gibson.
If the studio doesn't see Oscar glory for SILENCE - too bleak - they could push it to an Easter 2017 release. Or worse, they decide to keep it under locks for a year so they can premier it at the big festivals next year, get strong word of mouth running & release it in Fall 2017.

So if that earlier post about a screening on August 23rd is authentic we're three days post that. Has anyone seen any comments or news about people's opinion from the screening? Even a tweet from some guy saying "Yes, it's over three hours long & very good."?
