"My reaction after seeing a screening: This film isn’t Oscar material, it pushes the envelope in every possible manner, including nudity and sex. And I mean in ways that would make Lars Von Trier look twice. This is more like fearless film making. It tells the story truthfully and with no over dramatic BS. Leo deserves every award out there for this role but he will probably not get it since He plays the character straight and with no exaggeration, it’s hilarious, and endlessly entertaining. This movie may be released daring awards season but it’s more like Scorsese letting out his daring inner independent film maker more than Oscar bait for anyone involved. And the movie is all the better for it. We can stop talking about the Oscars now, because clearly neither Leo nor Marty really give a *beep*. This is a masterpiece and will be remembered as a classic, every bit as good and entertaining as Goodfellas. Statues or not, you guys are in for a good time." www.imdb.com/title/tt0993846/board/thread/223332028

Why has Paramont not lifted the embargo on reviews? Maybe this won't get the raves of 12 Years but it's made several leading critics' Top 10 Lists, including A.O. Scott's, Peter Travers and AFI. To me, the longer they drag it on, the more critics like Lumenick can keep bashing it and making it seem like the film is a flat out turkey instead of it being a good film, if maybe divisive. I'll take a so-so Scorsese film any day over most of what Hollywood creates and awards, including Russell.)

The embargo will be lifted in four days. Embargos are part of the marketing strategy for bigger tent pole movies. It is a way to make sure that the buzz and hype for a film will culminate at the right time. And the right time is as close to the release date as possible.

That's the only thing that's been bothering me. I expect this to be as divisive as Spring Breakers was but because the reviews have been embargoed until a week before it releases people are convinced it's going to get awful reviews and is a turkey and its annoying how bad some people want this movie to fail.

I think some critics don't like the Scorsese-DiCaprio pairing. They want them to fail, thinking Scorsese will drop DiCaprio and go back to DeNiro as his muse. This could happen but the two relationships are very different, their collaborations have been different and the actors have different styles. Also, I don't think 70 something DeNiro wants to be doing Travis B. anymore - if he wants that intensity, energy any longer.
That said, I'm not sure critics know what they want from a Scorsese film. They complain about missing the edgy, raw Scorsese yet it appears they prefer the more "assessible" Anerican Hustle with it's more like able characters. So, I'm not sure these critics really want edgy Scorsese. But we'll have to see once the movie gets out.

@ Sikri06 when a studio knows it has a turkey on its hands, does it embargo reviews until the release date?,

EXACTLY!!! Like the people who despise DiCaprio's collaborations with Scorsese and hopes this movie fails so Leo can face another snub have been so obnoxious, they remind me of the guys who made the 'I hate Leonardo DiCaprio' sites during Titanic era because of how pressed they are on bashing Leo. Then there's also the people that are going on and on about American Hustle being so much better than this. People constantly say they miss the edgy Marty of the past and now he finally makes a project that IS edgy and is far from Oscar bait like Gangs Of New York or The Aviator and yet they still complain. It's just so frustrating. What's even more annoying are the people criticizing the movie for its unlikeable characters and how extreme it is when all Marty, Leo, and Terence Winter wanted to do was stay true to Belfort's life and his novel as much as possible. If they watered it down, made it more 'Hollywood', people would then complain about that. I just want the movie to come here already because I'm sick of the people who just keep bashing this movie and trying to spread negative word about it so much while creaming over American Hustle.

The thing is, if this was a turkey, they could of easily gone the Shutter Island route and dumped this in the beginning of 2014 or something. With the way some people have been championing this film, I refuse to believe its a turkey. Polarizing yes, but a failure?

@ Sikri06 when a studio knows it has a turkey on its hands, does it embargo reviews until the release date?, They would like to, but that is not possible. Usually it is two or three days before the release.

My 26 year-old niece is a SAG member and saw the film yesterday afternoon in Los Angeles. Here's what she had to say... I'm blind... I thought you were quoting someone else talking about their niece. Was she also on the nominating committee? Also, apparently Scorsese will be at the DGA screening tonight. Although, it doesn't say he will do a Q&A, this is the first time he's at a screening, right?

With Marty missing the Globe nom. it is really important that the DGA appreciates it well enough to give him a nom.

thanks, arnzilla. I wanted to see if the SAG screenings were exclusively for those from SAG who would be nominating. With Marty missing the Globe nom. it is really important that the DGA appreciates it well enough to give him a nom. which director you think is vulnerable?
