I'm surprised to hear it's completed. Seems way too early. Btw, imdb still has it being in post production.

I'm surprised to hear it's completed. Seems way too early. Btw, imdb still has it being in post production. Actually the timing is right. Paramount plans an awards campaign. An Oscar-campaign usually requires a movie to get shown and get good reviews from the fall festivals, Venice, Telluride (Hugo went there), Toronto and New York. This is important to be in the awards-talks prior to the start of voting for SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globes and Critic's Choice. If a movie doesn't get in at least some of these precursors, it's gonna be extremely difficult to be nominated for the Oscars.

Yes, the timing would be right if it was planned that it would go to some of these festivals and start an awards campaign early. But I don't think that's the case, is it? I haven't heard of Wolf going to any festivals or that Paramount plans a campaign.
Hugo was released around the same time and only appeared in NYFF while still unfinished. I don't remember it going to Telluride...
But apart from that, what makes me doubt its completed status is that 6-7 months is a short post-production time for Scorsese's films.

On IMDB it says it is completed instead of Pre Production now.

But wouldn't it be ok for the sneak/surprise to be an unfinished film?

Yep, the unfinished Hugo was the NYFF surprise 2 years ago, after all.
