Disney will no longer accept ads from the streaming giant Netflix on its entertainment networks, changing its advertising policy as the company makes a major push into the streaming space.

"The direct-to-consumer business has evolved, with many more entrants looking to advertise in traditional television and across our portfolio of networks," a Disney spokesperson said Friday in a statement. "While the initial decision was strictly advertising-based, we reevaluated our strategy to reflect the comprehensive business relationships we have with many of these companies, as direct-to-consumer is one element.”

Disney is not abandoning all ad revenue from Netflix, however. The company will continue to accept ads from the streamer on ESPN. Netflix does not have any live sports, so it may not be seen as a direct competitor to that channel. Disney networks like ABC and Freeform will be impacted by the change, while channels like FX did not accept ads from Netflix even before this.

Netflix still won't honor the current theatrical window even after months of talks with AMC and others regarding playing Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. What are your thoughts?

We've been talking to them for, gosh, several years. Certainly they know better than we do, but I believe their business model is going to evolve as they see maturation of their core model and face more competition, and as they spend more and more money on big movies. It only makes sense that they would lean into the theatrical business.

Are you disappointed you won't be carrying The Irishman?

Yes, I think so. I haven't seen it, but certainly he's a phenomenal director, and I imagine he's made a movie to be shown in theaters.

What would it require for AMC to carry Netflix titles?

They would have to decide to release a movie in the way major studios do.

The studio heads — including some who had passed on Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” at various point in its development — acknowledged that only Netflix could have gotten the three-hour-plus, $150 million-plus film made.

Stuber agreed that Netflix has a different approach to the economics. “When I took the job [in 2017], I was building a new studio. We have no IP, we have no library, we can’t remake things,” he said. “So you have to say, what is your opportunity? And your opportunity is filmmakers. For us to get Marty [Scorsese] at Netflix was a big thing. It was a big win. So that was one thing. And then the economics. We have enough subscribers that we think the movie can deliver on. Thankfully he over-delivered.”

Gianopulos noted: “It was very ambitious for a studio to take on a project like that. There is a different perception of the economics. For us, at that level, for a period drama — or for anyone, I would submit — it was ambitious. And it was perhaps too ambitious.”

Emmerich added, “That’s where the consumer wins. I don’t think any of the studios could make that movie at that cost at that length and come out alive… The only difference for us, and maybe for the average consumer — I’ll bet everyone at this table wants to see ‘The Irishman’ in a theater.”

Martin Scorsese’s lengthy mobster epic, ranking with “Parasite” and “A Marriage Story” as the year’s best-reviewed release, opened in a hodgepodge assortment of eight New York and Los Angeles theaters ahead of a staggered theatrical release before its Netflix debut on November 27. (Many theaters will continue to play the film.) While Netflix will not release numbers, by looking at individual theater websites, we are estimating a weekend gross of $350,000 (within a +/- range of $25,000).

This includes some theaters with minimal seating (L.A.’s Alamo Drafthouse initially had only two shows in one 50-seat theater; the Laemmle Monica with three shows on two screens only had 600 seats for the full day). But the IFC Center in New York sold out two screens all weekend. The 1,200-seat upgraded Belasco Theater had some sellouts (along with reports of excellent presentation) as second-hand resale ticket sites offered seats at close to $100.

Needless to say, a normal Scorsese release with a marquee cast and stellar reviews, presented in top theaters with multiple screens and public appearances, would have done substantially more. So far the response is as good as Netflix could want for a film that the streamer’s customers will watch at home later this month.
