One role that is very hotly anticipated is her leading one in Vinyl, Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming ‘70s-era HBO series about the rise and fall of a record company. Wilde is Devon Finestra, the wife of label head Richie, played by Bobby Cannavale.
“I can promise you it’s really good,” she says, absolutely beaming. “Scorsese has a childlike enthusiasm for filmmaking and his energy is limitless, and it inspired me to have the same uncorrupted love for storytelling.”

Olivia Wilde learned the hard way that you should always be nice to your guests.

The actress revealed that as a child, she tried to boss around Mick Jagger when her parents invited the rocker over for a party – now decades later, The Rolling Stones' frontman is her boss as an executive producer of HBO's Vinyl.

In an exclusive First Look at Wilde's emmy magazine cover story, the actress remembers how her parents, well-known journalists Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, once hosted get-togethers with luminaries including Jagger.

"I was probably 10, maybe a little younger, and he was sitting in my seat at the dinner table," she recalls. "I came in and demanded that he get off my chair. He told me to go to bed, which was hilarious at the time, even more hilarious now that he's my boss."

Wilde stars with Bobby Cannavale and Ray Romano in the upcoming 1970s-set music series, which is also produced by Martin Scorsese, but despite the show's pedigree, she still had to be convinced to join. She was pregnant at the time, and balked at the idea of playing the role of the wife, worrying it would be a two-dimensional character.

"I think there was something about me being pregnant that made me very ballsy, but I said, 'Listen, if you want a wife character back in the shadows with no development, hire someone else,' " she said. "I just had been doing it too long to play that. I was like, 'You'll find someone who really wants that role. It's not me. I'll watch the show every week, but I'm not going to be your housewife.' And they kind of laughed and said, 'Oh, no, no. We can assure you.' And they completely delivered on their promise."

She started shooting just four weeks after the birth of her son Otis.

"I didn't want any of these boys to think, 'Is she too delicate to handle this?' So I would just go and pump [breast milk] and come back to rehearsal and pump and come back to set. And I felt so incredibly grateful that I did."

Although she’s married to a record exec played by Bobby Cannavale, Devon, your character in Vinyl, used to be a model-actress in Warhol’s Factory scene. Is this another sexually fluid role?

Well, it was a time of sexual revolution, when people were liberating themselves from their conservative ’50s childhoods. Devon is on this journey of self-discovery. She’s a real romantic who’d love to leave her rich life in Greenwich, Conn., to live a more honest life back in the downtown artist scene, and her sexuality is a big part of that.

What can you tell us about your upcoming project Vinyl?

Vinyl is Terry Winter’s new HBO series, and Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese are producers. It’s great. I actually just watched the pilot this morning and it blew my mind. I’m still kind of high off of it. But it is a tremendous project. The cast is insane, incredible, and actually by a stroke of good fortune, Reed Morano was our DP on Vinyl. So I was able to leave the set of Meadowland and have my partner, because Reed and I really, truly became partners on that film. I was able to go to my new job and have her there, too, so we’re kind of going through post-production of Meadowland while working together on Vinyl, which was really fun. She’s such a good DP, but I wanted to talk about range–just the way she shot Meadowland with a very specific palate and style, and then Vinyl being a completely different world, 1973 New York, very gritty, about the music scene, which is a very different tone set by Scorsese, who directed the pilot.

“Kid’s got taste,” the actress, 31, captioned the image of her tot donning a Beatles tee while kissing a poster promoting her new HBO series.

“Scorsese is like a new film student who’s got his first chance at making a movie, every single time,” she says. “He sees the opportunity to make a movie as this luxury, this joy, this gift, and that rubs off on everyone.”

She plays Devon Finestra, a bored wife and mother who longs for her younger years as a model and habituee of Andy Warhol’s Factory scene. The fashion, as you would expect, is storytelling in and of itself. In the pilot episode, filmed just a few weeks after Wilde gave birth, she is seen wearing an array of gorgeous kaftans around her character’s suburban home. Later on in the series, Finestra undergoes a transformation; she is no longer a hippie, but instead costumed in slinky vintage pieces by Ossie Clark and Halston.

At last, the actress believes the perception of the young ingenue is changing. She cites Juno Temple, a Vinyl co-star, as an example. “She is a total individual; she’s never tried to look or behave like anyone else.”
