Kurt Anderson: Tell me about the germ for "Vinyl." Where did it come from and where do Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger come in?

Terence Winter: The germ of this started well before I got involved. In 1996, Mick Jagger approached Martin Scorsese and pitched him on the idea of doing a version of the movie "Casino" set in the world of rock and roll. In 2007, 11 years later, Martin Scorsese called me up. I had just written the pilot episode of "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Wolf of Wall Street." He said,”Listen, I have this other thing. It's a movie set in the world of rock and roll. I'm doing it with Mick Jagger. Do you think you'd be interested in that?"


Does Mick Jagger hang around the set? Does he read scripts?

He is involved, very much so. He and Martin Scorsese are very hands-on. You know, Mick, due to his touring schedule, is often not physically present.

Oh yeah, he's in a band.

Yeah, he has a little side gig that he does. But he sat in the writing room for a couple days, which was a pretty incredible thing for me and my writers.

There is also beautiful period production design — I was amazed by the ravaged, graffiti-covered subway cars and subway station. New York subways aren't that way anymore, so that must have been a very expensive ruin to create.

That was created digitally. That train was pristine, and the station as well. That's the interesting thing, you usually use visual effects to make things look better. On our show, we need it to make [things] look decrepit.

Terence Winter: Which actually happened.

Yeah though not during a show.

Terence Winter: Not during a show. We took a little (license). It's interesting, one of the first things Richie says in the pilot is, "Here's my story clouded by lost brain cells and self-aggrandizement and maybe a little bit bullshit," so this is how he remembers it. So we have a very unreliable narrator. So I don't know. Look, it collapsed. So don't fucking worry about it.

I'm watching that scene and I'm asking myself, "Is this really happening, or is he in the midst of a horrible cocaine fantasy?"

Terence Winter: It actually did happen and the New York Dolls did perform there. They weren't performing there when the actual buildings collapsed, although a band had been rehearsing there. It was amazing: one of the little factoids from the newspaper articles at the time was that the microphone stand was unscathed, it was standing straight up and that was like the only thing in the place that was still intact. Everything else was just demolished.

Terence Winter is leaving the show.

There is a major behind-the-scenes shakeup at HBO’s 1970s rock n roll drama Vinyl as the series heads into its second season. Co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Terence Winter has been let go over creative differences. Feature writer Scott Z. Burns (The Borne Ultimatum) has been named executive producer/showrunner and Max Borenstein (Godzilla) executive producer on the project, which is executive produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese. Burns has no TV credits, while Borenstein developed and executive produced Fox’s Minority Report series adaptation.

While Vinyl has been a modest ratings performer, the move is surprising as HBO has been Emmy winner Winter’s TV home for more than two decades. He emerged as one of the pay cable network’s top writer-producers, first on The Sopranos, where he rose to executive producer, then on Boardwalk Empire, which he created and ran for its entire span, working alongside Scorsese, and then on Vinyl, another collaboration with Scorsese. (The two also collaborated on The Wolf of Wall Street, which earned both Oscar nominations).

“As we head into the second season of Vinyl, we have decided it is an appropriate time to make a change in the creative direction of the show,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Terry Winter at HBO on projects from The Sopranos to Boardwalk Empire to Vinyl, and we look forward to our next collaboration with him. We are pleased to welcome Scott Z. Burns, executive producer and showrunner, and Max Borenstein, executive producer, as the new team helming the show.

Vinyl had a 20-year development history, with Scorsese and Jagger originally attempting to do it as a movie. When it was set up at HBO in 2010, Winter was brought in as a writer/executive producer. Originally he was not going to be showrunner because he was busy working on Boardwalk Empire but as development took awhile, the Vinyl team eventually waited for him to wrap Boardwalk Empire and segue straight to Vinyl.

The big-budget period drama has drawn soft ratings for its first season, which wraps its run on April 14, with viewership between 760,000 and 570,000 for a premiere airing, but it has been will received by critics and netted a second-season pickup. The writers are scheduled to convene to work on Season 2 this month. Here is what Winter envisioned for next season in an interview with Deadline conducted ahead of the series premiere.

“The series will progress in time like Boardwalk did. So, we’ll probably move forward into 1974 when we come back; ’74 was the year that CBGB’s opened, it was the year that The Ramones kind of formed. The Vietnam War was officially over so you had a lot of guys coming back from that too.

In terms of Richie’s (Bobby Cannavale ) story, without spoiling what happens at the end of the season, he’s still alive and moving forward, he’s really on a quest to make good his desire to find something new and do something that makes an impact in this business. When we meet him in the pilot, he’s so anesthetized to music, he doesn’t even go to clubs anymore. But then that electricity he feels at the Dolls show and the way he comes out of that pilot is the thing that fuels him for the rest of the series.”

"Period pieces are really tough," Winter admitted to a roomful of entertainment execs and investors at the Dream Downtown hotel. "It's tough to depict reality that's still fresh in someone's mind." Despite being renewed for a second season and counting names like Mick Jagger and Martin Scorcese among its co-creators, the show has netted unimpressive ratings for HBO. "Maybe it's too soon?" Winter wondered aloud about tackling that particular era of New York City's history. "I don't know."

Terence Winter delivered (in my mind) a great show in VINYL Season 1 & it's a shame to see him go. The man gave use Boardwalk Empire.

On to the future though. I think Season 2 is where VINYL as a series will really start to come into it's own. Season 1 did have it's ups & downs mainly because (I'd argue) it was a series that needed to find it's voice after being a film project for 20 years. Too many cooks in the kitchen convoluted the recipe but sure made for some compelling television. Like Boardwalk Empire though I think the second season is really where things are going to come to fruition as the show focuses itself on what it should always be about first - character & the MUSIC.

So we got a year or so until Season 2. Most likely next January or February and I'm looking forward to Scott Z. Burns & the entire creative team taking the criticism they got hit with for Season 1 & really deliver something amazing!
