Red Star Twirlers have cameo in Scorcese film

DERRY — Red Star Twirler coach Gina Hutchinson is glad she answered the phone when a New York City casting agent called.

Ashley Andrew of Salem and Alyssa McLaughlin are glad she did.

The agent wondered whether Andrew, now a twirler at Syracuse, would like a cameo in Martin Scorcese’s movie, “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill and Rob Reiner.

And, the agent added, she would like another twirler Andrew’s age or a little older to join her.

Hutchinson had just the candidate, McLaughlin. In July, she was named first runnerup to Miss Majorette of America at the National Baton Twirling Association’s National Championship at the University of Notre Dame. She now lives in the Hartford area and is a master’s degree candidate at the University of Connecticut.

When Hutchinson called, Andrew was doing homework at Syracuse and McLaughlin was at her day job at Aetna. It didn’t take the two young women to grab the opportunity.

The first rehearsal was Dec. 2 in New York City. On Dec. 4, the day of the actual filming, the two had to report for hair and makeup at 5:30 a.m. Sixteen hours later, they finished the scene and headed back to UConn and Syracuse.

The movie, likely to be rated R, will be released in 2013.

This is one more stop on a very long and exciting road for Red Star Twirlers. From performances around the world to leading college bands and being talent winners in pageants, from performing at Disney World and Universal Studios to the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, both Andrew and McLaughlin have had plenty of experience.

The young women said the long hours surprised them. They were excited to stand within 10 feet of DiCaprio and to teach Jonah Hill to twirl.

The woman who appeared in Penthouse claims she's shooting again next week with Leo and McC.

She also says that "shooting is not ending this week... It is still very much in production."

As for the shooting they better wrap it up soon, because Rodrigo Prieto has allready started packing for Sundance.

From what I saw on set Scorsese is going to use some Narrative and visual styles(kinda like goodfellas) to set the tone of the film. I know this because there was one scene where stock market crook Jordan(played by Leo) is talking directly to the camera and describing how he runs things in the Stratton office and why.

There is also a scene where Jonah hills character goes ballistic on one of the employees, Jonah then proceeds to pee in a trash container and eat a gold fish as the young Stockbrokers are directed to cheer him on. I don't want to give any more away but Jonah is badass in this film. Just brilliant. Everything that was shot took place in the Stratton office.
