EXCLUSIVE: Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter’s long-gestating rock ‘n’ roll drama for HBO has taken another step to fruition. Feature writer-directors Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) have been tapped to showrun the project should it go to series. The two also will do some rewriting on Winter’s pilot script, working with him. The untitled Rock ‘n’ Roll series, which Boardwalk Empire executive producers Scorsese and Winter created with Rolling Stones’ Jagger, has been in the works at HBO since 2010, moving on a slow track because of the auspices’ busy schedules. Winter has been running Boardwalk Empire, which is headed into Season 4; Scorsese has been focused on features; while Jagger has been touring. Things started to pick up earlier this summer when Bobby Cannavale became attached to play the lead, and the project began gearing up for an early 2014 shoot with Scorsese directing the pilot just like he did with the Winter-penned Boardwalk Empire pilot that netted him a directing Emmy. There is no formal green light yet, but hiring showrunners is usually a good sign that things are moving in that direction. The project follows the exploits of Richie (Cannavale), a cocaine-fueled record exec in New York City circa 1977, when punk, disco and a new form of music called hip-hop collided. Richie is a talented A&R guy who is elevated to run a big label, even though he thinks he’s better suited to focusing on day-to-day music matters. Koppelman is bringing nine years of experience as an A&R executive to the project. He worked for Elektra Records, Giant Records, SBK Records and EMI Records and is credited with discovering Tracy Chapman.

Scorsese and Jagger, who worked together on the Rolling Stones documentary Shine A Light, began the rock ‘n’ roll project as a feature after Jagger told Scorsese they ought to make a movie like Casino in the world of the music biz. They set it at Paramount, which is involved in the series. Scorsese, Jagger, Winter, Jagged Films’ Victoria Pearman, Sikelia president Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Rick Yorn are executive producers. In TV, CAA-repped Koppelman and Levien wrote the 2003 ABC drama pilot The Street Lawyer and created and executive produced the ESPN series Tilt. They most recently penned the upcoming Ben Affleck-Justin Timberlake starrer Runner Runner.

[Olivia Wilde has been tapped to join Bobby Cannavale in Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger’s rock ’n’ roll pilot for HBO, which is scheduled to begin lensing in the early summer.

The still-untitled drama explores the drug and sex-fueled music business of 1970s New York as punk and disco are on the rise. The show is seen through the eyes of Cannavale’s Richie Finestra, a record executive trying to resurrect his label and find the next new sound. Wilde will play Devon Finestra, Richie’s wife and a former actress-model who re-immerses herself in her former Bohemian life when Richie’s crisis causes strain on their family.

Scorsese is attached to direct the pilot, which is penned by regular collaborator Terence Winter (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Boardwalk Empire”) and George Mastras (“Breaking Bad”) with Mastras serving as showrunner. All are exec producing, along with Jagger, Victoria Pearman, Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Rick Yorn.

Martin Scorsese’s go-to actor may be Leonardo DiCaprio, but the Hollywood megastar is getting some healthy competition from J.C. MacKenzie.

MacKenzie’s “summer job” has found him working under the legendary director. Again. Their untitled HBO TV pilot marks the Ottawa-raised actor’s fourth collaboration with Scorsese. The period drama is set in the drug-and-sex charged music scene of 1970s New York – a mecca for talent, ambition and hedonism. Perhaps it’s only fitting that Mick Jagger serves as the series’ executive producer.

“It’s a really cool time to explore,” says MacKenzie. “There are shadier elements within the industry… and they deal with those on the show … You’re not dealing with pristine characters; these are certainly flawed human beings.”

The actor says viewers can also expect a lot of humour – and, of course, a lot of music. On a personal front, MacKenzie’s favourite acts from that era include The Rolling Stones, Steppenwolf and April Wine.

The Scorsese pilot centres on record company executive Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale), ever-desperate to find the next big thing. MacKenzie plays Skip Fontaine, head of sales for the label. The cast includes Olivia Wilde as Finestra’s wife and Ray Romano as head of promotions.

With the pedigree behind the show – including Terence Winter as showrunner – MacKenzie is confident HBO will pick it up. (The last time Scorsese and Winter teamed up for an HBO pilot was for Boardwalk Empire.) Jagger’s star power also certainly helps. The rock star’s son, James, even plays a musician on the show, and has inherited his father’s “charismatic” charm, MacKenzie says. The elder Jagger recently visited the set for a massive party scene being shot at a Long Island mansion. The singer stuck to the sidelines in an elegant, Armani suit, taking it all in.

When Martin Scorsese gave an unknown actor a big break in the director’s upcoming HBO pilot about the rock industry — it turned into a thespian’s worst anxiety dream come to life in front of co-stars Ray Romano and Bobby Cannavale.
Luckily, there was a Hollywood ending.
Michael J. Burg was cast in the untitled project about the ’70s music biz as a German record exec.
After a “table read” with the cast — in a role that “had a couple lines in German” — Burg was invited by Scorsese to privately rehearse with Romano and Cannavale.
In a swanky penthouse, the “Raging Bull” director thrust eight new pages of dialogue into Burg’s hand, explaining he’d expand the part. But the dialog was “all in German” — and, even worse, it was in “German legalese.”
While blond, blue-eyed Burg certainly looks Teutonic, he’s from a farm in Missouri.
“I don’t speak German,” he said. After a disastrous attempt, “they looked at me, speechless,” Burg said.
Romano cracked, “So . . . you play a lot of Germans?”
But rather than sack Burg, the production hired him two speech coaches and he aced the scene.
Cannavale laughingly recalled the incident to girlfriend Rose Byrne at a wrap party, and Burg’s got a role in HBO’s upcoming “Criminal Justice.”
He also auditioned for a Coen Bros. movie “in Swedish.”

Martin Scorsese, who directed the pilot of the yet-to-be-titled series, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and "Boardwalk Empire" creator Terence Winter are three of the show's executive producers, and main cast members include Andrew Dice Clay, Ray Romano, Olivia Wilde and Juno Temple.

Cannavale says having such notable Hollywood names attached to this project is yet another sign that cable-TV shows have gained ground on film with respect to scope and quality.

"The (TV) medium itself has changed," says Cannavale, 44. "Cable has really helped. I mean, the role on 'Boardwalk Empire' really helped me in terms of being seen as a film actor, because it was pretty much a film.

"That's why you got Steven Soderbergh shooting 'The Knick,' that's why (Scorsese) shoots 'Boardwalk Empire' and the pilot I just did with him for HBO. You see a lot more film people get involved in the medium because the quality's there."

Recurring cast for Scorsese's HBO rock 'n' roll drama promoted to series regulars

The actors originally cast as “recurring” in HBO’s untitled rock ‘n’ roll project—Paul Ben-Victor, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, James Jagger, and J.C. MacKenzie—have been promoted to regulars, now that the project has gotten a series order.

James Jagger (Mick’s son) plays Kip Stevens, the lead singer of an early punk band called Nasty Bits; MacKenzie plays Skip Fontaine, Richie’s partner and Head of Sales for American Century Records; Sørensen (Pitch Perfect 2) plays Ingrid, Andy Warhol’s favorite Danish actress; and Ben-Victor plays a record company owner.

Production on the series is expected to begin this summer.
