The question is whether the entire casting process starts from scratch, or is Daniel Day-Lewis still attached to play Ferreira? If not the only alternative I can possibly see is Gary Oldman. Gael Garcia Bernal and del Toro looks to be definitively out, otherwise he wouldn't have to recast. For Rodrigues I would like to see Javier Bardem. It would be weird to cast three Portuguese roles and not have any Portuguese actors. That is part of the reason why I want someone like Diogo Morgado for Garpe.
The rest of the casting is harder. I don't really know any Japanese actors besides Ken Watanabe.

Assuming Scorsese makes all the Portuguese into Brits like he did to the French in Hugo, that would mean the actor portraying Garpe would be a Brit approximately the same age as Garfield: 30ish. So far I can come up with Jack Huston and Eddie Redmayne. Any others?

I think Scorsese will do exactly like in Hugo. However, Chloe Moretz is not British, and that didn't stop her from getting the part in Hugo, so I could definitely see an American actor as Garrpe. These are some actors I would find interesting as Garrpe (taken Garfield's age into consideration). Some of the actors are more suitable than others, but I thought I'd throw them all out there. James McAvoy Oscar Isaac Tom Hardy Jim Sturgess Michael Fassbender Tom Hiddleston Bendict Cumberbatch While we are at it, James Franco would have been an excellent, excellent choice for Rodrigues (and even Garrpe) in my opinion. He has the age, the look and he is a great actor.

So far I can come up with Jack Huston and Eddie Redmayne. Any others? I was thinking that Jack Huston could be Garrpe. He's from the UK, about the same age as Garfield and Scorsese has worked with him before. He could pass for a Mediterranean type. I just saw that he played a Portuguese man recently in Night Train to Lisbon.
