Liam Neeson To Star In Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

Liam Neeson will star with Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe in Silence, the Martin Scorsese-directed adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel about 17th century Jesuits who to try bring Christianity to isolated Japan. The film is being financed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis, Corsan and A1. Emmett/Furla/Oasis just funded Lone Survivor. The script is by Jay Cocks and Scorsese and production will begin in Taiwan later this year.

Neeson is scheduled to reprise in Taken 3, but while Neeson has remade himself as an action star, Silence brings him back to the kind of work he did in Schindler’s List and in the Scorsese-directed Gangs Of New York. The film is produced by Irwin Winkler, Randall Emmett and George Furla, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Checchi Gori, Barbara DeFina and Paul Breuls, with Niels Juul exec producing. Neeson, who next stars in the action film Non-Stop, voices a role in The Lego Movie, and stars in the Seth MacFarlane-directed A Million Ways To Die In The West and A Walk Among The Tombstones, is repped by CAA.

This should be something, given that Scorsese has dreamed of making the picture for two decades. His The Wolf Of Wall Street is up for five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Neeson is a strong third choice. But I would have Taken Gary Oldman or DDL over him. But nice to see that Neeson still wants to use his chops.

I hadn't even considered Neeson. That came right out of the blue for me. Need to think a bit about that.

Hmm, I don't think it's a great choice. Honestly, Liam Neeson wouldn't be one of my first five choices for the role. Having said that, it's not a bad choice either. Neeson is obviously a good actor. However, I'm having a hard time imagining him as the almost mythological figure (and without the strong accent). But when you imagine DDL in the role, anything else is bound to disappoint you.

I guess Neeson's role as Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins is perhaps the role most similar to this one. Or am I forgetting something?

Ethan Frome was a "tortured" man. And Neeson did play a "Priest" before.

I haven't seen Ethan Froome. Do you recommend it? And yes, Neeson did play a "priest" before, but that priest was very unorthodox.

I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember enjoying the emotional suffering.

Speaking to Fairfax earlier this week, Neeson conceded the role was something of a departure from the tough-guy turns with which he has become associated of late, but added it was a return to territory he explored long ago.

"I was brought up quite a strict Irish Catholic, and I played a Jesuit in The Mission, 27 years ago," the Belfast-born actor said. "So I have a little bit of experience, but there's certainly a wealth of research to do."

We're going to film in Taiwan in August.

Shooting in August makes sense since all the casting announcements & everything makes it look clear that Scorsese's pilot to his new HBO show is going in front of the cameras first.

This might mean we'll get a new HBO Scrosese show next Fall followed up by a new Scorsese film in November or December!

Neeson’s next film is “Silence,” about two Jesuit priests who face persecution when they travel to Japan in the 1600s to spread Christianity. The actor, who has been tight-lipped to the press about the movie, relented to our inquiries.

“It’s a chance to work with Martin Scorsese again. He’s a brilliant filmmaker,” says Neeson. “The script is very good. It’s a period of history I’m fascinated with. It made me think of Joseph Conrad’s book ‘Heart of Darkness’ and ‘Apocalypse Now,’ that sort of quest.”

Neeson revealed that shooting starts in Taiwan this January with costars Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. “But I don’t go out there until March,” he says, adding that “Marty might come and find me and kill me for talking about it.”
