The lead role of Tom White, a 29-year-old Texas lawman who helps lead the investigation into the murders, was written for Scorsese’s frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio, but the actor instead asked to play another pivotal role. And so Plemons ultimately nabbed the big part.
“Getting to play that part in that film with these people, this story, was just the wildest dream scenario,” Plemons says. “And shooting in the location where it all took place, with almost all of the extras are descendants of these characters, was special and heavy in a way that I don’t know if I’ve ever experienced.” He teases one courtroom scene which offered “the opportunity to let it all out—the 100 years of rage, and sorrow, and all of it.” He also adds, “It was a moment I’ll never forget.” Maybe so—but there’s a lot more ahead, too, for an actor rising faster in Hollywood by the day.
