Barry Rothbart may be a funny guy, but he's not joking when he says he auditioned for Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" three times before realizing who the director was.

"It was my first big movie, and I like to focus on the material rather than the names involved," explains the 30-year-old standup from Queens. "I was pretty shocked when I finally saw it was Scorsese and Leo (DiCaprio). I got really nervous."

He also got the part, playing "an asshole stockbroker," thanks to his comedy and ad-lib abilities.

"Scorsese wanted actors who are funny and can improvise, but I have no idea if it's a comedy," he says of the experience. "None of us could gauge the tone when we shot it, and Scorsese's so casual. He would actually come on set and go, ‘What do you guys think we should do in this scene?' And we'd be, ‘Oh, you don't have anything planned?' So we shot all this crazy, wacky stuff for seven months, and I have no idea how it'll all cut together."

Let’s talk about The Wolf of Wall Street. You got the part through an audition?

Yeah. I auditioned and at first I didn’t know what it was or who it was? Even though my agents had emailed that to me. I read the script and was like, “Oh, it’s just a Wall Street movie,” and I wasn’t super nervous about it. I just went in, and it was a lot of improv, and I played this brash, New York, fast-talking stockbroker type, and, apparently, they liked it. They showed it to Martin Scorsese, and I was thinking there was no way he was going to watch the tape. He’s not going to watch an audition from some asshole comedian, but no, he really watched it and wanted to bring me in. So I went in for the callback, which was in a hotel room, and I had to go in with three other dudes to sit in front of Martin Scorsese sitting on a bed in a hotel, and we just had to improvise phone pitches as stockbrokers.

Did you leave thinking you nailed it?

I guess so. I did a lot of weird stuff because he didn’t want us to go on script. So I was yelling, I splashed water in the reader’s face.

Really?

Yeah, he loved it. He’s a big fan of standup comedy.

Did you do much improv on set?

Oh yeah. It was all improv. He would come in and be like, “Hey man, what do you want to do in this scene?” And you’re like, “You’re Martin Scorcese. You’re asking ME what you want me to do?” You would think that everything would be planned out, but it’s so loose. That’s why I don’t know what they’re going to keep, what they’re going to get rid of, 'cause we would literally do 10 hours of a scene different each time.

Are you one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s buddies in the movie?

Yeah, there’s like seven of us. We pal around with him and do coke and go to orgies. I’m kind of the guy in the group who goes way overboard with everything. A real asshole. Peter DeBlasio, that’s the name of my character.

But on each occasion, she steers the conversation round to Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, which she recently finished shooting opposite DiCaprio. He plays the drug-addled stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who served time for fraud and money laundering; she is his tough-cookie wife, who gets to kick and flail and to scream "You're not taking the fucking children!", or variations on that sentiment.

Still, silver linings and all that: if Pan Am had continued, she wouldn't have been free to hurl herself at doors and walls under Scorsese's direction, or to tear her vocal cords to shreds howling like a banshee at DiCaprio for weeks on end. If you want a measure of how gruelling the production was, Robbie has one at the ready: "The most relaxing point was when we had to stop shooting for 10 days because the hurricane hit New York. That was my vacation. No power or water. All you could do was sit there and chill." As taxing as the film was, she wouldn't have had it any other way. "That's why I love this job. I love getting drawn into it. And most of the time I'm doing my best work when I'm in that vulnerable state."

Keeping up with Scorsese and DiCaprio, who had already made four films together, was possibly the biggest challenge. "They're telepathic," she says. "You'd be sitting there discussing a scene and they'll be like, 'Do you think …?' 'Hmm.' 'But what about the …?' 'Yeah.' I'm going: 'Hello? Did I miss something? Are we changing anything? I have no idea what we're changing.' Honestly, I just put all my energy into keeping up with them because they are both powerhouses in their own way; if you don't keep up you get left behind. They just won't cut to you and your part will get smaller and smaller."

You play an FBI agent in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. How was that?

It was amazing. I can’t wait to see it. And Leo DiCaprio? He’s very cool. Here’s an impressive thing about him. It was the first day of shooting and…you know, it’s Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. And I’m Kyle Chandler! [Laughs.] You think, you don’t need to be nervous. But hell yeah, you’re nervous. But they make you feel very easy. Martin Scorsese couldn’t have made me feel more comfortable from the first handshake. Everyone’s working together. There’s no bull—t. And on the first day, Leo was looking at the monitor and came back and said, ‘I just want to tell you it looks really good.’ He went out of his way to make other actors feel good. And he’s just so good, I just like to watch him. He always does something different. This movie is just going to be outrageously fun to watch.

Last year, Milioti auditioned for Martin Scorsese’s film The Wolf of Wall Street, to play the first wife of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), before he became a high-flying stockbroker. When she didn’t hear back, she thought that was that. Then right before the weekend of the Tony Awards, Milioti was asked to shoot a screen test with DiCaprio and Scorsese.

“I had Tonys rehearsal at 7 a.m. to, like, 10:30 a.m.,” she says. “And [then] I put a ton of makeup on and did my hair and put on some high heels and went to this three-hour session.…We went to this room, some weird place on 36th Street and 11th Avenue, and there was a camera, and I was mic’d, and there were, like, three different makeshift sets for different types of scenes. There’s this scene where we’re both making coffee in the morning, and he’s stressed about finding a job, and so I’m helping him look for jobs. We had this little table set up with two Dunkin’ Donuts coffees, and [Scorsese] is like, ‘Just improvise a morning at home.’ So we were sitting there, and he put his arm around and sort of touched the back of my head, and I thought he was gonna go in for a kiss, so I was like that” — she closes her eyes and opens her mouth — “and he didn’t come in at all. And then I spilled my coffee, and they had to cut and reset everything. I was so nervous. I’d also just seen Titanic in 3D a couple weeks before with my friend, and when I walked in I was like, ‘Ugh, from the boat!’ and then two seconds later I was fine.”

Needless to say, Milioti booked the part. “I found out about it the morning after the Tonys, when I was dry-heaving in my bathrobe from having had so much to drink.” She smiles. “The universe had balance.”

"It was the best experience of my entire life," she recalls, brimming with excitement over the film that is sure to make her name. "It was the most insane script – I don't know how to prepare people for the movie they're going to see. Everyone involved was the best at what they do so creatively it was heaven." And there's the added bonus of playing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, of course...

"I did my test with him and Marty in a room. We sat down and all started talking about the weather and I thought, 'You're in a room with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio and we're talking about the weather. Say something interesting.' And it failed me.

"But then we got into the scenes and I got completely carried away and ended up hitting Leo in the face. It's not in the script anywhere. I just sat there completely frozen and thought, 'You just hit Leonardo DiCaprio in the face. They're going to sue you, they're going to fire you.' And then he and Marty burst out laughing. Leo just said, 'Hit me that hard again'."

“Wolf” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a crooked securities trader living the 1990s New York high life and Robbie is the woman, Naomi, who lives much of it with him.

“I play the second wife of Jordan Belfort, who Leo plays; his mistress-turned-wife,” Robbie explains. “We have a tumultuous relationship; he’s a drug addict and sex addict and, effectively, a criminal. They’re both very, very strong personalities, so there’s a lot of fighting and screaming.”

Robbie describes Naomi as a tough Brooklyn girl. To nail a foulmouthed, New York borough accent, the sweet-spoken Aussie employed a secret weapon.

“One of my closest friends was born and bred in Queens,” Robbie reveals. “She sounds kind of similar in cadence and attitude — and how outspoken she is! I mean, I’m around her all the time, and I’m continually fascinated by how little filter she has and what she says and her reactions to situations, which are completely opposite from how I would ever react. So I definitely kept an eye on her.”

Let's talk about "Wolf of Wall Street." The trailer was great, and this movie looks insane.

I went in and only worked about five days. First of all, I remember going to meet Scorsese. I am going through Newark, I am getting driven, I am like, "Man, this is the guy I studied in film school, and now I am going to...no, I am getting driven to his house." All right! So I go to meet him, and the way he and I really communicated was musically. He loves beats and tones and sounds: da-bump-bump-bah. And, man, that's a language I really understand and am turned on by. So he'd speak English, and I'd speak back English to him, but mainly it would become da-bump-bah, ts-ts-ts, ah-ggg-gah. And I was like ya-ya-ya-ya.

And then working with Leonardo was excellent. I had heard good things about him. We stole from each other. And what I mean by that is, a great set to work on is where it's so creatively open, people steal from each other and the person being stolen from is more flattered than the person who is stealing. You know what I mean? Get a good idea bam, steal it, use it, take it, go. And it was his idea, the whole thing you'll see in there [he starts beating his chest]. I do that before scenes to relax my voice and relax me, and then I started the take. So, we had it and then Leo goes, "Hang on a second, Marty." [Rolls his hand for another take] So we put it in the scene, and then we started an interaction with it.

No.

I'm halfway into it right now.

It's very brash. A lot of exclamation points. But the stories are wild.
Well, no, I didn't read the book. And I came in, I only worked about five days on that. But I was teed up with a -- it was an incredible, I mean, the character ... [Laughing]

Why are you laughing?
Well, because, you know, you read, you get characters. And it happened to me in "Dazed and Confused." It's a character that's got three scenes and in one of the scenes he says, "That's what I love about those high school girls, man. I get older, but they stay the same age." There's certain lines like that where you go "Aw, pfft, who is this guy?" There's certain launch pad lines.

So "The Wolf of Wall Street" has that kind of line?
Yeah, it had a line in there that just sent me flying. And I went, "Oh, my God. Well, if he says that and he means it, well then ..."

Yeah, he's in the first chapter of the book. There's cocaine involved.
That's in the ballpark of where we're going. And his logic is tremendous.
