This award marks the first presented to Martin Scorsese from the Chicago International Film Festival. The Festival, which launched Scorsese’s film career in 1967, was also where the late Roger Ebert first saw his film – a pivotal moment for them both.

The Irishman brings many of the familiar Scorsese themes full circle. His mastery of the cinema is fully visible in this film through stellar performances from Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The Irishman and Martin Scorsese truly capture the spirit of why the Chicago International Film Festival was founded 55 years ago.

THE IRISHMAN

If you need to kill someone – either quietly, without all the fuss and additional red tape, or making a statement out of it – there is no better man to do the job than Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran. An old-school hitman, Frank was trained in taking lives during the murderous Italian campaign of World War II, and after returning to the United States, he quickly rose in prominence in the eyes of some of organised crime’s most notorious families. Especially the Bufalino family, for which he killed a number of undesirable people, including his long-time friend Jimmy Hoffa, the legendary labour union leader whose disappearance had been, for decades, considered one of the greatest American mysteries. When Frank reaches old age and sits silently in a wheelchair, the only thing he can do is reflect on his colourful life as a criminal. The man wonders if he had really helped to shape the way the second half of the 20th century turned out, or if he was just another small cog in the machine that devoured his soul.

The Irishman, though, is not a fond adieu. It’s a kiss-off, as blunt and unsentimental as the swift, ugly, messy ways in which men kill other men throughout its 209 minutes. Anyone who sees the movie expecting the presence of Pacino (79), Robert De Niro (76), and Joe Pesci (76 and gloriously resurrected from retirement) to constitute a kind of nostalgia trip is in for the same brutal reckoning to which Scorsese subjects himself. His film casts a cold, hard eye on the sinuous, kinetic, seductive thrills of the entire gangster-film genre—pleasures that no director in history has retailed to audiences as persuasively as he has—then strips them away to stare at what they were dressing up and disguising: violent acts committed by morally vacant men intent on preserving money, status, or turf. Nothing less, but nothing more. And in the end—as the movie reminds you with periodic forward-leaping here’s-how-this-guy-got-killed subtitles—death comes for every single one of them.

The film doesn’t sermonize. Scorsese doesn’t pretend those deaths are the pigeons coming home to roost. They’re not the wages of sin, but a fact: You spend your life killing, and unless someone kills you along the way, you get old and you die, possibly in a nursing home, maybe in prison, almost certainly diminished by infirmity, and inevitably alone. The last character standing in The Irishman does not triumph. He sits there talking, an ill old man telling his story to nobody in particular—to you, in the audience, someone he knows may be indifferent. In one of the film’s most jolting lines, the title character, played by De Niro, who is about to recount the years-long struggle between the mob and Jimmy Hoffa that lies at the heart of the movie, interrupts his own narration to admit that he knows that most people have no idea who Hoffa is.

No gangster movie has looked so dispassionately at the essential inconsequentiality of men who spend their entire existences trying to amass power. Why bother? Scorsese seems to say. Everyone dies, including those who waste their lives this way. He indicts the men the movie is about, himself for ever having thought to make them larger than life when they are resolutely life-size, and us for being entertained by it all. If that sounds stern or punitive, it’s anything but. Even at 77, he is far too passionately in love with making movies not to fill The Irishman with many of the pleasures they can provide. Still, the final message seems unmistakable: This is over. We’re not doing it anymore. It will be interesting to see how that plays with the Academy, whose membership is still male, up in years, and prone to reliving past glories.

Los Angeles, CA - November 25, 2019 - The Hollywood Critics Association, formerly known as The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, is pleased to announce their nominees for the 3rd Annual Hollywood Critic Awards being held at the Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles on January 9th, 2020.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon in Hollywood tops the HCA nominations list with a total of eleven nominations, while Netflix’s The Irishman and A24’s Waves each earn nine. Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, which premiered at Sundance back in January, scored a total of seven nominations. Todd Phillips’ controversial Joker received quite a bit of love from the members of the HCA with a total of seven nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Noah Baumbach’s widely praised Marriage Story received six nominations, including Best Actor for Adam Driver and Best Actress for Scarlett Johansson.
