So far the reactions range from "where's the de-aging?" to "it's too subtle." That's exactly the reaction I would want if I worked on it. There's no wide-eyed look that I've seen in other films. That's probably what Scorsese was talking about. They appeared to leave some, if not all, eyelid droop to avoid that.

The blue eyes are a bit distracting. I know Frank Sheeran had blue eyes, but on De Niro it looks a bit weird, because it feels so unfamiliar. Not as bad as Johnny Depp in Black Mass, but still.

The phone scene takes place in the 1950s, so Sheeran would have been in his 30s. De Niro there looks like he's in his 50s so it's kinda like when he was in his 40s playing Jimmy Conway in his 20s.

The trailer is good, although I was expecting something more pompous and explicitly stated, regarding their reteaming. I really can't buy Sheeran being in his 30s in that phone call scene. The eyebrow-to-eyebag area just doesn't cut it. It's from a man in his 60s. The hand is pretty good, though. If the de-aging has indeed been left at a minimum, I guess it will be better than having it more extreme and ending up with something unrealistic. I think once the film gets going, it will be easier to go along with it, provided that the posture and body movements the actors use are those of a younger person. In the end, the result might be similar to what they would have achieved with makeup a decade ago.

I've watched the trailer about 30 times now. IMO, the change in eye color is not helping the de-aging effect, especially during close-ups. The medium close-ups are good, because the eyes are, of course, smaller and less distracting. Also, at the beginning of that telephone shot, when the camera starts to turn around De Niro's head, his eyes are not blue. They're much lighter. As the shot progresses, his eyes become navy blue. It's as if De Niro is playing a character from Dune.

What didn't they opt for blue lenses for the earlier scenes, too? Speaking of blues, I love the deep blues they've used in the film. The deep browns, as well. In fact, I love the entire rich, dark look.

I'm still dying to know what movie theme(s) Scorsese is using for the film's soundtrack.
