Jim Norton playing young Don Rickles

On the acting front, he is playing comedian Don Rickles in Martin Scorsese’s film “The Irishman.” Norton shares scenes with Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

“Scorsese is such a lovely guy,” Norton said. “He wants everyone to feel good on the set. There’s a nice energy. That’s why everybody performs well for him.”

For a reaction shot, De Niro asked to hear Norton’s act during a scene. “It was one of the greatest moments of my life,” he said.

How did you land a role in Martin Scorsese’s new movie “The Irishman” coming out next year?

I had this film on my radar for some time. If there was any chance, I told my agent, please keep your eyes and ears open. They started casting for it and I had done an independent film. The casting directors want to see you in the act and I had this little scene. It was sent to Scorsese and they gravitated toward it. When it came to audition for the role, I was in the room with this casting director for about 30 minutes. I left swearing at myself and talked to my agent saying ‘you’re going to be getting a call, but it’s not going to be good.’ The casting director said I wasn’t consistent, but gave me another chance to make another tape. That tape was eventually sent to Scorsese, who said I wasn’t right for that role, but he had another role for me. The lesson is that when you might think you’re out, sometimes you get a second chance.

We hear your first scene is with Robert De Niro. What was it like working with him?

I went on the set (keep in mind acting is something I don’t do on a regular basis) and was nervous and sweating. These people are not only actors, but I was acting with the top actors (Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel) in Hollywood. I just didn’t want to get fired and sent home. When Scorsese said cut, I wasn’t going to go up to De Niro and say hi. It was more like speak when spoken to. They were all gracious and very professional. After a scene, Pesci, Scorsese and De Niro would get into a huddle, but I wouldn’t go over to them. I was like a sponge on set as to how this works and that works. After the first day though, I felt really comfortable that I could hold my own and like I belonged there.

Stephen is set to star in the upcoming American biographical crime film The Irishmen, which is set to premiere on Netflix in 2019.
But to get the part Stephen had to audition for De Niro and legendary director Martin Scorsese.

Speaking to Radio X Presenter Gordon Smart, Stephen said: "It was a Wednesday and my agent phoned and said you have to go to New York on Saturday morning, and I was like, what? 'Martin is doing this film, he’s interested in you playing the role, but you have to go and meet Robert De Niro’.

"So you can imagine, (as) a kid growing up in a block of flats in Kirkby, always wanted to be an actor and brought up on Scorsese films and De Niro films, it was a big thing, flying out there.

"So I get there and he’s a bit late, but I’ve seen Marty and we’re having a chat. And the casting woman goes, ‘look he [De Niro] doesn’t really talk much so if you don’t get much, back off of him - don’t worry’.

"And anyway, they had to come and knock on the door and get me out cause I was going to miss my plane. I was in there for two hours and we were just chatting. He’s just such a wonderful man.

“People say these crazy things, like you should never meet your heroes, but he just put me at ease, asked me how I got into acting, where I was from, my background and my heritage. It was amazing.

“After that meeting, I went, well you’ve got to tell me what’s going on. You can’t leave me like that - have I got it? He was like, ‘ah okay give us a couple of minutes kid’.

"And he came back and said, ‘I’ll let Marty tell ya’, and he comes back in. And he was like, ‘right, you wanna do this kid’? And I was like, ‘yeah!’

“If I was a footy player it would be like getting a call to say you’re playing in the Champions League final. It was unbelievable.

"And I felt like I’d been made. He gave me a bit of a cuddle and said, ‘you’re gonna be great, kid’. On set was unbelievable.”

They both played Al Capone. Didn`t this come up on their conversation?!!!...
