Also, the shot itself frames Jordan so that he appears to be inside the tank. While Belfort's expression seems to suggest one of slight envy and admiration for the Banker's mastery and containment of the sea, he remains unaware that he is now subservient to the Banker. Just another addition to the Banker's exotic trophy case. -d

thanks, dino. Not to dwell too much on this scene, but it did seem important to me when I saw it first. Belfort and Saurel are introduced and they almost seem like they're from the same cloth, and yet when they sit down to talk (about a business arrangement that I assume is beneficial to both of them) they seem peculiarly confrontational with each other. Belfort's distorted view of himself and others could mean that he's thinking he's got the upper hand in this situation. He's sitting on this armchair as if he's sitting on a throne and has the ocean behind, while the banker has a beautiful but small aquarium behind him. So in that last shot of that scene, you could be right that he's viewed as just another fish in the banker's sea.

Just got back from seeing 'Wolf'!.WHAT A FILM. A comedy but also a very sad reflection on our life today. As someone who spent many years on a tax haven island can vouch for the suitcases of money and some people's crazy lives. Never felt any envy though although we scrapped by on farmers wages our lives were much more exciting. Thought it really portrayed two sides of the picture and was a wonderful piece of work by Leo. Leo certainly deserved those nominations. We always laugh that his films always seem to be rated R when they don't really deserve it but this time Leo made sure he lived up to the R rating! Loved his courage. A unique and ground breaking film to treasure for years.

Has anyone seen the film multiple times? Sasha Stone recently mentioned seeing it for the sixth time. I've seen it five times in the theater.

Only once yet, but it hasn't been in the theaters here too long. I definitely need to see it a few more times before I feel I'm able to judge it fairly. Seeing you have already watched it five times, where do you rank it in Scorsese's filmography?

The best of the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaborations and in the top tier of Scorsese's oeuvre.

The best of the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaborations and in the top tier of Scorsese's oeuvre. That's interesting. How did your view of it change watching it again? Personally, I wasn't that ecstatic when I watched it.

I saw it twice. It's like arnzilla says: the best of the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaborations and in the top tier of Scorsese's oeuvre.

That's interesting. How did your view of it change watching it again? I guess it got more "serious" and its point of view was crystalized with repeat viewings.

I watched the film 3 times in 4 days. All before New Year. For me The Aviator remains their best film and Leo`s best leading performance ever. TWOWS is as good as GONY, TD, SI. But it was definitely their most bold one. Almost anarchic on conception and execution. I applaud them for that.
BTW. In 2 of my 3 viewings we had walkouts. An old couple the 1st time and an old man in the 2nd. Both about the same time. 30 minutes in. I have spend half of my life inside a movie theater and i haven`t seen that before. EVER. I was surprised a bit. Although i can understand it too. Especially if u r of a certain age and u r not prepared of what u r gonna see.

I have been waiting some weeks to share my thoughts, but I better get to it. It is probably Marty's best since GoodFellas or at least Casino and the best collaboration with Leo. The pace is kinetic and the only thing that noticed the three hour runtime was my bladder. The scene with Leo and Matthew was one of the best in any of Marty's films and Leo and Jonah chasing each other on ludes was spectacular. I would have liked to see more of Matthew, but the story didn't allow that. I would also have liked to see more of Margot. Not only is she talented and drop dead beautiful, but Nadine is actually very intelligent and has a phd. in psychology. That didn't come through because the perspective was kept on Jordan's perception of her. If she had gotten to speak to us like Karen Hill did in GoodFellas, she could have offered us some more insight on her thoughts.
The boat sequence was spectacular and you can see where the $90 million went, when you watch that.
If I had to make cuts to make room for more Margot, I would be cutting out some strippers and hookers. We didn't necessarily need to see them again, as long as the voice over told us, that Jordan still indulged in them.
I would also have liked the explanations of the inner workings of the company to have been kept. I don't think it matters if Marty or Leo didn't fully understand and IPO as long as Terence Winter did (he worked on Wall Street in the 80's), and they used the explanations he had written.
Those are my minor criticisms that keeps it from being on the same level as GoodFellas and closer to Casino. But that is still pretty damn good in my book.

I would have liked to see more of Milioti, but I'm glad they didn't use her as Jordan's redemption.

Milioti too. I'm watching all the HIMYM episodes she is in this season because of her, but she is also in that too little.

Arnz
Not sure what you meant below , are you talking about :
1.The fact that in the actual book he talks about how bad he felt about what happened between Denise and him , and that she was the one woman in his life who loved him for himself yet that part was cut out of the scene with Aunt Emma ?
2. Or that he states that the FBI were going to go after Denise , and that is what prompted him to talk more than anything else ?
3. Or that in showing more of the Denise/Jordan scenes you would see that he didn't start out this way ; he wasn't 'born' a 'bad seed'?
And after having read both books, you are aware that their relationship is one that has not ever been mended , whereas, he and Nadine have come to a friendly relationship/co parenting of the kids .
